CLASSICAL FUNCTION: Etymologically related to the characters, both pronounced "de", which refer to the rectitude of the heart and original nature. The character "ting" (listen) is composed of the character which stands for the rectitude of the heart ("de") combined with that for the ear ("erh" [?]) of the disciple who is listening attentively. The overall sense imparted by this character is that, through attentive listening, one's heart may be rectified. This point assists the patient in cultivating virture by looking and listening to the heart of life.

CLASSICAL FUNCTION: Can treat both the jing and the zhi. It is in directing the mind down into the jing, the depths of self, via the zhi (fixing the will), that the "lost" individual may rediscover heaven's commands, and return to bring his or her heart-mind back into the world fully expressed. With the careful direction of the practitioner, this point may serve to soften an overly hard will and protect a depleted jing or strenthen the will to focus the shen upon unused potential.

REMARKS: Ting Pt mother, tonification departure point of TM of Bladder.

ANATOMY:

MODERN FUNCTION: First aid pain treatment of back problems by coupling with SI 18 (gathering point of TMs of Yang of leg), dysmenorrhea, late periods, labor and delivery, malposition of fetus (before and during early labor), urinary difficulty, nocturnal spermatorrhea.

CLASSICAL FUNCTION: removes dampness,induces dampness downwards, clears brain, regulates childbirth.
