Guide to Submitting Case Studies for Publication

Patrick  J. LaRiccia, MD was kind enough to give us this outline for case study publication. He also gives  the article: Biofeedback and Hypnosis in Weaning  from Mechanical Ventilators in Vol 87 p. 267-269.February 1985 issue of CHEST as an example.

 I. Abstract
 

  1. Briefly describe your case. Include  your conclusion.


 


II.  Introduction
  1. Give brief background information regarding  the clinical entity you are treating; e.g., lower back pain.

    >> Include at least one reference.

     
  2. Give brief background information regarding  acupuncture.

    >> Include at least one reference.


III.Methods

 A. Describe the case.

  • History
  • Western  medicine perspective.
  • Chinese  medicine perspective.

Physical Exam; e.g., Tongue appearence, Pulse, Palpation  of acupuncture points.

  • Western  medicine perspective.
  • Chinese  medicine perspective.

 Laboratory, imaging and other studies.

  • Diagnosis.
  • Western  medicine perspective.
  • Chinese  medicine perspective.

 

B. Describe the DEPENDENT VARIABLE clearly and the method of measurement.

  • e.g  1. The patient wrote down the number of headaches that occurred each day in a  diary. The notation was done just before bed.
  • e.g. 2. The patient wrote down the distance walked at a casual pace, recorded to the  nearest 1/4 block in a diary. The notation  was recorded at the completion of the daily walk.

C. Describe the baseline frequency, intensity or duration of any target symptom, or laboratory value (dependent variable).

  • State  how the baseline was determined i.e. pretreatment diary, objective reports, or patient's verbal report.

D. Describe the INDEPENDENT VARIABLE (INTERVENTION)

    1. Acupuncture  points or sites.
    2. Characteristics  and dimensions of the needles used.
    3. Type of needling technique
      • Direction
      • Depth
      • Type of stimulation
      • Was  "de chi" elicited?
      • Japanese style of needling, etc.
      • Duration needle left in place.
    4. Frequency  of acupuncture treatments.
    5. Total  number of treatments over what time span.


IV.  Results
  1. Report effect on dependent variable.
